What Do The Studies Show?

Pet parents have been buying CBD oils, treats, and chews for their dogs and cats for years now — but the research has been catching up more slowly. The good news: the studies that do exist consistently point in the same direction. CBD appears to be safe, well-tolerated, and helpful for the issues most people are using it for.

Here is a plain-English summary of what the published research actually shows about CBD for pets, and where the science is still developing.

The first major canine CBD study (Cornell, 2018)

In July 2018, researchers at Cornell University published the first peer-reviewed clinical study on CBD in dogs (Frontiers in Veterinary Science). The study looked at dogs with osteoarthritis and measured comfort, mobility, and quality-of-life scores after eight weeks on CBD oil at roughly 2 mg per kg of body weight, twice daily.

What they found: A significant majority of dogs showed measurable improvement in comfort and activity. No clinically meaningful side effects were reported. The dogs that responded best showed improvement within two to four weeks of starting CBD.

That study has been the foundation for most pet-CBD product development since.

What follow-up research has shown

Since 2018, dozens of additional pet CBD studies have been published. The themes are remarkably consistent:

• Anxiety and stress. Studies on dogs in stressful environments — kennels, car rides, fireworks — have shown CBD-treated dogs displayed fewer stress-related behaviors than control groups. • Joint comfort and mobility. Multiple studies have replicated the Cornell finding that CBD supports comfort in older dogs with joint issues. Effect sizes vary, but the direction is consistent.
• Seizure activity (epileptic dogs). Colorado State University published research on CBD for treatment-resistant epilepsy in dogs. A subset of dogs showed reduced seizure frequency. This is being studied further.
• Tolerance and safety. Across all major studies, side effects have been mild and uncommon — most often a brief rise in liver enzymes that resolved after stopping or lowering the dose. The American Veterinary Medical Association has noted CBD’s general safety profile while calling for more research.

What the studies say about cats

Feline CBD research is thinner than canine research, but emerging studies suggest cats also tolerate CBD well at appropriate doses. Cats metabolize cannabinoids differently than dogs, so dosing guidance is not identical — typically lower per pound of body weight. Always start small and work up. What the research does NOT yet prove

It is just as important to be honest about what the studies do not claim:

• CBD is not a cure for any specific disease in pets.
• The FDA has not approved any CBD product for use in animals.
• Long-term, multi-year safety data is still limited.
• Dosage guidelines are still being refined as more research is published.

Anyone selling pet CBD with disease-treatment claims is getting ahead of the science. We don’t, and we won’t.

What this means for choosing a product

The studies that look promising all share a few things in common:

1. Full spectrum hemp extract, not isolate. The entourage effect (terpenes + cannabinoids working together) appears to drive most of the observed benefit. Read our breakdown of full spectrum vs isolate hemp.
2. Third-party lab testing on every batch. Without a Certificate of Analysis, you don’t actually know what’s in the bottle.
3. Reasonable dosing matched to the pet’s weight. More is not better with CBD.
4. Consistent daily use over 2-4 weeks before judging effect. CBD is not a one-and-done solution.
